Digestate

Digestate is a nutrient-rich substance produced by anaerobic digestion that can be used as a fertiliser. It consists of leftover indigestible material and dead micro-organisms – the volume of digestate will be around 90-95% of what was fed into the digester.

By using digestate instead of synthetic fertilisers derived from natural gas, we can save energy, cut consumption of fossil fuels and importantly reduce our carbon footprint. All the nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium present in the feedstock will remain in the digestate as none is present in the biogas. Typical values for nutrients are:

  • Nitrogen: 4.4 kg/tonne
  • Phosphorous: 1.5 kg/tonne
  • Potassium: 5.2 kg/tonne

However, the nutrients are considerably more bio-available than in raw slurry, meaning it is easier for plants to make use of the nutrients. Therefore, this can be particularly valuable for land within Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZ) where applications of organic nitrogen are restricted.

Digestate can be used straight from the digester, in which case it is called whole digestate.

Although it has some similar characteristics, digestate is not compost. Compost is produced by aerobic micro-organisms, meaning they require oxygen from the air.

We advise and offer precision applications methods including Dribble bar / Trailing Shoe / Grass Land Injector / Cultivation, and we ensure the required nutrients are achieved for your individual crop requirements.

Wastes from the Dairy Products Industry

Milk Washings are derived from the processing of dairy products. These products may be applied to the land because they contain nutrients that will give a benefit to agriculture. They do not contain any substances that are harmful to human or animal health.

What do milk washings contain? The analysis will vary from individual dairies but it is consistent from those units. Typical analysis of nutrient content supplied from an application of 50m 3 (depending on the source) ranges from:

N 70-19 kg/Ha
P2O5 20-11 kg/Ha
K2 O 10-5 kg/Ha
SO3 34-5 kg/Ha

In addition, it also contains some useful levels of Mg, Ca and Na. pH 6.8-4.5 This application rate is 50m 50m3 /Ha & this can be applied up to 5 times a year (total 250m3) providing the total permissible level of N is not exceeded.

The Benefits

  • A free source of important nutrients
  • Excellent “kick start” for grass following cutting or grazing
  • Works well applied to stubbles, Summer, Winter or Spring. Maize fields, stubble turnips and many other crops
  • Minimal farmer involvement, no use of own farm labour or machinery

How is it Applied to Fields?

We apply the product via a tractor mounted umbilical system using either surface application, shallow tine cultivation or deep leg injection (subsoil benefit). The application method we use will depend on crop and ground conditions. We locate a storage vessel at a suitable position and then the liquid waste is pumped to the tractor through the umbilical pipe.

Rules & Regulations

Philip Trim Contractors are fully licensed and regulated by the Environment Agency, and applications of waste can only take place with their approval.

Our Agronomist carries out a full risk assessment, including soil analysis and crop nutrient requirements for each individual field. Subject to approval by the Environment Agency a Deployment Certificate is issued.

Milk washings are exempt under the NVZ guidelines and may be spread all year round subject to ground conditions.

At Philip Trim Contractors, we have a team of skilled operatives to ensure that all work is professionally carried out to the highest standards and compliant with all codes of practice. Moreover, our every endeavour is made to ensure account is taken of environmental, ecological and physical conditions.

We have invested heavily into lagoons providing valuable all weather all year round storage to comply with the Environment Agency regulations. Tractor driven stirrer, and overhead stirrer are the essential equipment required in preparation to empty our own and on farm lagoons. In addition, our Xerion slurry and liquid spreader provides the capacity to empty lagoons capable of spreading 200,000 gallons a day.
